Maxwell Davenport Taylor was a US Army officer who became a pioneer in airborne warfare in Europe during World War II, Chief of Staff of the Army from 1955 to 1959, and Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1962 to 1964. He later served as US ambassador to South Vietnam during the early years of the Vietnam War (1964-1965).
