How Does the Royal Navy Name its Ships?

Introduction

The names for a new ship or a class of ship are initially proposed by the Royal Navy’s Ships’ Names and Badges Committee (SNBC).

HMS Liverpool, D92, Royal Navy, Warship (1)
HMS Liverpool

Considerations

In considering any name, the SNBC takes into account many aspects including:

  • History of the name;
  • Battle honours;
  • Civil support; and
  • Potential affiliations that may go with it.

Who Makes the Decision?

The SNBC presents their recommendations to the Navy Board and the name(s) chosen by the Board are forwarded to the Secretary of State for Defence before being submitted to the reigning monarch for approval.
