The introduction of the Citizenship (Armed Forces) Act 2014 allows the home secretary to waive the requirement for foreign and Commonwealth personnel applying for naturalisation to be in the UK on day one of the five year qualifying period, provided they are serving overseas with the British military.
However, applying for citizenship is not required for service in the Regular Armed Forces and remains a personal choice, therefore the Ministry of Defence is not in a position to fund any applications.
The process for taking the citizenship test is managed through the Home Office.
