Can Hong Kong Nationals Join the Royal Navy?

Introduction

  • The short answer is no.

Outline

  • UK Government policy entitles citizens of Hong Kong to live and work in the United Kingdom (UK).
  • However, no applicant from, or in, Hong Kong will have their application processed unless they are a sole British National and passport holder.
  • “Hong Kong British nationals are not eligible to join the RN.”

Nationality and Residency

For security reasons, some roles have stricter nationality and residency requirements than others. But, in general, you can join the Royal Navy if you are:

  • A national of the United Kingdom or Ireland
  • A Commonwealth citizen who is applying from inside their own country (age 18) or as a resident of the UK (age 16). You must also hold a valid passport
  • A dual British national who is not required to complete National Service (written evidence may be required)
  • A British national living abroad
