4 Emerging Military Technology Trends in 2022

Introduction

In the past decade, a number of global industries and sectors have been impacted by emerging technology trends. It has been the military sector, however, that has experienced the greatest change with a series of developments strengthening capabilities, optimising defence operations, and improving overall military efficiency. To familiarise yourself with emerging military technology trends for 2022, continue reading.

1. Artificial Intelligence

It may not necessarily be a brand-new technology for 2022 but this year will see the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence within the global military sector finally take hold. It has already been capitalised on during intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions in the past and allows for the use of computer vision to power autonomous combat systems which can result in fewer casualties. The incorporation of artificial intelligence can also allow for the leverage of digital twin technology and machine learning so brand-new equipment and products can be tested ahead of time.

2. Radar Electronic Support Measures

Radar Electronic Support Measures (RESM) are – in simple terms – actions taken to detect and intercept sources of radiated electromagnetic energy for the purpose of immediate threat recognition. It comes as several technology companies, such as Elbit UK, have designed and manufactured technology that is partly or wholly powered by RESM, Electronic Warfare (EW), and EW Command and Control (EWC2) systems. It has been poised to revolutionise military technology in 2022 as well as for decades to come as RESM steadily become the norm.

3. Robotics

It may have only been possible in big-budget blockbusters in the past but as the past couple of years have proven, robotic technology is already impacting a number of global industries and sectors and the military sector is no different. It can protect forces, boost situational awareness, reduce physical workload, and, perhaps most importantly, facilitate flexibility and movement whilst traversing rough terrains. This has ensured the military achieve key objectives so they can secure populations and consolidate gains.

4. Internet of Military Things

If you have heard of the Internet of Things (IoT), you may have also heard of the Internet of Military Things (IoMT, or Internet of Battlefield Things). It shares a similar definition in that it, in the very simplest of terms, refers to the connection of ships, planes, drones, tanks, operating bases, and soldiers throughout an entire cohesive network. This has been known to enhance perception and understanding whilst in the field and increase situational awareness when response time is of the utmost importance. In 2022, this is expected to continue growing and developing to brand-new heights as well as for years to come.

Summary

In 2022, a number of emerging military technology trends are predicted to revolutionise the military sector. This includes artificial intelligence to leverage digital twin technology and machine learning so brand-new equipment and products can be tested, RESM for immediate threat recognition, robotics to protect forces and boost situational awareness, and, last but not least, the IoMT for the connection of ships, planes, drones, tanks, operating bases, and soldiers throughout an entire cohesive network.
