The face of Army recruiting has changed. In March 2013, The Recruiting Partnering Project (RPP) was implemented with Capita as the contract provider.

The implementation of RPP greatly reduced the number of military recruiting posts. Therefore the suitability and proficiency of recruiters is even more important military personnel have a smaller representation across recruiting.

The UK military need to attract, identify, select and prepare the ‘right’ individuals for the demanding role of recruiter.

Information on the UK military recruitment and selection process can be found here.

2.0     Types of Recruiting Post

There are a number of recruiting posts available to serving military personnel, as outlined below.

2.1     Corps Recruiting Team

A Corps Recruiting Team (CRT) is usually based in the Regimental or Corps HQ of the relevant Arms or Service. CRTs visit various schools, college career fairs and events throughout the country to promote and raise awareness of the career opportunities within the UK military. They may also support adventurous training (AT) exercises overseas depending on the Corps they represent.

The makeup of CRTs varies depending on the Arms or Service they represent but Privates (OR-2) and Corporals (OR-4) (or Service equivalent) will represent the bulk of manpower.

2.2     Outreach Team

Outreach Teams (O/T) are multi cap-badge and undertake a range of activities with potential recruits such as Insight Courses, visits to schools and colleges, Career Fairs and Personal Development Activity Days.

Manpower within O/Ts ranges from Private (OR-2) to Sergeant (OR-6) (or Service Equivalent). O/Ts are located in towns across the UK, which includes:

  • Wethersfield
  • Inverness
  • Aldershot
  • Exeter
  • York
  • Preston
  • Glasgow
  • Chilwell
  • Stafford
  • Woolwich
  • Brecon
  • Belfast

2.3     Army Careers Centres

The primary function of Army Careers Centres (ACC) is to advise potential recruits about the best career for them within the Army (or Service equivalent), these recruiters also have responsibilities to recruit for their Corps or Regiment.

Typically recruiters will be in the rank of Corporal (OR-4, or Service equivalent). ACCs are located in towns across the UK, which includes:

  • Chatham
  • Bournemouth
  • Chelmsford
  • Southampton
  • Derby

2.4     National Recruiting Centre

The National Recruiting Centre (NRC) is located in Upavon. This individual, usually a Lance Corporal (OR-3, or Service equivalent) is responsible for ensuring potential recruits move through the recruiting process effectively. This is an office-based role working alongside all cap badges and civilian partners.

3.0     Selection

Each Service will hold a selection process for the above positions, although the exact format varies between the Services and their branches.

Aspirant recruiters can gain further information from their Chain of Command or relevant policies, e.g. Policy Directive 18 for the Royal Corps of Signals.
