1.0 Introduction

This article provides an overview of the recruitment and selection process for Naval Service Engineer Officers wishing to join the Irish Defence Forces (IDF).

2.0 What is the Role of a Naval Service Engineer Officer?

Naval Service Electrical/Electronic Engineer Officers are an integral part of the support structure for the operation of the Naval Service.

  • They carry out a variety of duties at sea and onshore were they ensure that the electrical and electronic systems for naval vessels are fully operational at all times.
  • They manage and instruct technicians on board ships and ashore.
  • They oversee repairs and maintenance, and solve any problems that occur.

3.0 Eligibility Criteria and Professional Qualifications

Criteria include:

  • Must be under 30 years of age on the closing date for applications.
  • Must hold a third level Degree (Level 8) or equivalent qualification recognised for Corporate Membership of Engineers Ireland in one of the following subjects:
    • Electronic engineering; or
    • Electrical engineering.

4.0 Naval Service Engineer Officer Competition

The recruitment and selection process for Naval Service Engineer Officers is held as required, and is known as the Naval Service Engineer Officer Competition. Dates for competitions are advertised in national newspapers and the IDF website.

The process includes:

  • Online Application.
  • Interview:
    • Candidates who are deemed eligible will be asked to attend for Interview.
  • Medical Exam:
    • The top scoring candidates at the Interview will be called to attend a full medical examination in the Naval Base at Haulbowline, Cork.
  • Security Clearance:
    • In conjunction with the medical exam all candidates will be security vetted by An Garda SÁochána.
  • Candidates will be required to pass both the medical examination and security vetting to be considered for induction.

Candidates are placed in a competition’s order of merit, with only the top scoring candidates being offered a commission in the IDF with the rank of Lieutenant (OF-2).

5.0 Naval Service Engineer Officer Training

All newly commissioned Naval Service Engineer Officers will undertake a Military Induction course.

This is followed by Initial Professional Development (IPD) which continues in general electrical/electronic engineering before commencing further training in one of a number of specialised disciplines including:

  • Electrical;
  • Electronic;
  • Control & Automation;
  • Navigation;
  • Radio Frequency Communication;
  • Information Technology; and/or
  • Ordnance (Weapons).

6.0 Assignment to First Unit

Naval Service Engineer Officers are assigned, to either a ship or shore base, according to the needs of the IDF.
