A Dizzying Array of Labels

Many people experience dizziness in everyday situations. Some also develop functional gait abnormalities and become excessively vigilant about sensations of imbalance.

These symptoms have been given a variety of labels, such as supermarket syndrome, chronic subjective dizziness, and phobic postural vertigo.

All of these are now gathered together under the heading of persistent postural perceptual dizziness.

A prevalence survey from Wales finds that symptoms of persistent postural
perceptual dizziness are frequent in the general population and that there is a continuum in symptom severity.
