Questions & Answers: Easy versus Good!

“Good questions outrank easy answers.”

Paul Anthony Samuelson (1915 to 2009) an American economist and the first American to win a Nobel Prize in economic sciences (The Nobel Foundation, 1970).

Putting context to this quote, one could state that “Understanding the real situation in any circumstance needs information and insight. These are usually obtained by asking the right questions!” (Bourne, 2011).

Other quotes that can be linked to the above include:

  • “Questioning is the door of knowledge.” (an Irish saying, I believe).
  • “He who asks a question is a fool for five minutes; he who does not ask a question remains a fool forever.” (Chinese proverb).
  • “Questions are the creative acts of intelligence.” (Unknown).
  • “The power to question is the basis of all human progress.” (Attributed to Indira Gandhi; Indian Politician and Prime Minister. 1917-1984).
  • “You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions.” (Attributed to Naguib Mahfouz; Egyptian novelist, screenplay writer and 1988 Nobel Prize for Literature) (The Nobel Foundation, 1988).
